ANTIQUE, DOULTON, LAMBETH, STONEWARE PITCHER COMMEMORATING GLADSTONE P. For your consideration, a very fine and handsome stoneware pitcher or jug, made at Lambeth by Doulton to commemorate the death of William Ewart Gladstone, the long serving Prime Minister of England under Queen Victoria. Elected to four terms, spanning 12 years, he is considered by many historians England’s greatest statesman. This large strap handled jug or pitcher, features a quotation, “Effort, honest, manful, humble effort – succeeds by its reflective action upon character better than success” on a banner, that swirls on either side of a beautiful center portrait medallion of Gladstone himself. A legend, “William Ewart Gladstone” adorns a band at the neck, just below the spout. We see no damage or flaw. Extensive markings on base. A very substantial piece.
