Mark V Marshall designed/carved Doulton Lambeth stoneware oil lamp from 1882 with depictions of dragons and mythical beasts, influenced by his time working with Martin Brothers until 1874 and stonemason father during his childhood. Mark Marshalls work is some of the boldest and most exuberant ever produced at the Doulton Art Pottery. Many of his pieces undoubtedly owe much to the Martin brothers, with grotesque and fanciful animals modeled in high relief and hiding among scrolling foliage. His pottery reliefs of Biblical scenes were exhibited at the Royal Academy and were particularly well received. His work was admired by John Ruskin. As a major influence in the Royal Doulton world in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Marshall designed and manufactured a wide range of grotesque figures in all sorts of scenes. Marshall + Doulton marks to both sections. EXCELLENT CONDITION – NO DAMAGE – CRACKS/CHIPS ETC OR ANY REPAIR An old conversion to electric – works fine/using at home. A marvellous ornament that’s usable every day. Absolutely stunning piece of work.. Gothic revival/grotesques influence in Marshall’s work from working on rebuilding of Palace of Westminster and then with the Martin Brothers. Mark Marshall, was quite possibly the most original designer in the history of Doultons. He worked at Doultons from 1878 to 1912, and from the beginning of his career there, his imagination was unrestrained. The diversity of his output was amazing. The variety of colours and shapes when making vases knew no rivals, but apart from that he ventured into fantastic and grotesque shapes. His importance in the story of Doultons progress into decorative ceramics is well illustrated in the bible of Doulton stoneware; The Doulton Lambeth Wares. Pages of illustrations show his genius. Mark Marshall, son of a stonemason, himself also trained as a stone mason and carved decorations for neo-gothic churches. For a brief period he worked for the Martin Brothers, art potters, who specialized in eccentric designs such as their famous birds. These early experiences shaped Marshalls taste for weird and wonderful Doulton designs. Reptiles and dragons encircle vases and grotesque masks adorn jugs. His work was perfect for the Humorous Exhibition held in London during the 1880s. Please note shade/wiring not included in sale. 47cm high without bulb/shade.
