STUNNING RARE & UNUSUAL 19th. CENTURY CASTLE HEDINGHAM MILK JUG EDWARD BINGHAM
STUNNING RARE & UNUSUAL 19th. CENTURY CASTLE HEDINGHAM MILK JUG. This is a superb, and I should think very rare, milk jug made in the Medievalist / Tudor style made by Edward Bingham at his Castle Hedingham factory Essex and dates from the mid to latter 19th. In a standard jug form it is depicted as a baluster bodied tin glazed jug with spout in green / yellow lead over-glaze with stylised applied relief depictions of a milk maid, while to the front is applied’milk’ lettering. It’s handle is decorated with an applied scrolling foliate design to the length of its spine. The potting is quite’rough’ / country, however this is the form it was meant to be to maintain the medievalist conceit with a’crustiness’ in the glaze which I’ve not come across before. The base has Bingham’s hand inscribed initials (‘EWB’), the applied relief Castle Hedingham mark and a hand incised’England no. 145′ – see photographs and details. It measures 6″ (15.25cm) h x 7″ (18cm) w across the belly to the handle approx; and is in excellent condition for this type of pottery, although there is a small glazed over chip to the pouring spout, also there are some chips to the base where the glaze drips have been removed for stability, to report apart from the above mentioned chip, glaze removal to the base, and’crustiness’ are all factory done and retailed like this – again see photographs and details. This is a stunning piece of quite rare and unusual period Castle Hedingham pottery which is in great condition, and with a low start price should attract a good deal of interest from all collectors.
