19th Century Victorian Doulton Lambeth Tapered Ewer Jug with Sterling Silver Lid
19th Century Victorian Doulton Lambeth Ewer jug of tapering form. Applied ceramic decoration in relief and hallmarked sterling silver lid. Bearing hallmarks for London, 1892, by Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank) Shepherd. Condition is overall good. Although showing one crack at the base of handle. The jug stands 33cm high and is 9.9cm / 3.8 in diameter across the base. The marks on the base show the Doulton Lambeth stamp, the pattern number 5704 and the incised tt decorators’ mark. The hallmarks on the rim are nice and clear to read and show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the Leopard for London assay office, R for 1892. Makers marks for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd. Founded as Jones, Watts & Doulton in Vauxhall in 1815, the firm moved to Lambeth in 1826, becoming Doulton & Co in 1854 and finally Royal Doulton in 1902. The company began producing art pottery at Lambeth around 1870 and quickly reached extraordinary levels of artistic quality. This tall stoneware jug has the classic Doulton Lambeth colour combination of cream and brown/terracotta in the’Harvest’ pattern. The main part of the body has a distinctive clear glazed ribbed decoration. The top rim has a good sized Sterling Silver cover. Would make a great vase or looks beautiful as a purely decorative piece. All Items are packaged with extreme care, well wrapped within a cardboard box to withstand their journey.
