LOVELY LATE 19th. CENTURY DOULTON MATCH STRIKERCH STRIKER
CENTURY DOULTON MATCH STRIKER. This is a wonderful Doulton stoneware match striker which dates I would guess from the end the 19th. Century to the beginning of the 20th. Its striking (no pun intended) feature is the relief frieze around its centre, which within a treacle coloured glaze is a geometric diamond pattern with applied high relief. Blue and white buttons surrounded by relief white oak leaves, while above and below in blue diamonds the white oak leaves are again repeated. Above is the heavily textured striking shoulder and above this is a wide relief blue rim to the match holding centre. The base is embossed with the Doulton mark and – “3967”, “661”, “a”, and what I assume is the artists mark “al” (probably for Annie Lyons) – see photographs and details. It measures 3″ (7.5cm) h x 3 3/4″ (9.5cm)w approx; and is in excellent condition with no defect at all to report. This is a lovely piece of period Doulton in near perfect condition (looks to never have been used) which with a low start price should have great appeal to both Doulton and match striker collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. A beautiful and extremely rare, shouldered, baluster vase, distinctive and attractive in appearance, set in a Renaissance style, that was made by Hannah Bolton Barlow in 1907. It has stunning dark tones of brown, fawn, grey, cream and blue with the usual factory signed identification marks, impressed to its base. England being added in 1891. Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines, restoration or damage. It does have some age-related base wear, commensurate with 111 years of age, but nothing unusual. Please take time to look at all 12 photos to fully appreciate the workmanship in this delightful vase. The Royal Doulton Company began as a partnership between John Doulton, Martha Jones, and John Watts, with a factory at Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, London. Their business specialised in making stoneware items. The company took the name Doulton in 1853. By 1871, Henry Doulton, John’s son, launched a studio at the Lambeth Pottery and offered work to designers and artists from the nearby Lambeth School of Art. The first to be engaged was George Tinworth followed by artists such as the Barlow family (Florence, Hannah, and Arthur), Frank Butler, Mark Marshall and Eliza Simmance. The headquarters building and factory of the Royal Doulton ceramics firm were in Lambeth, on the south bank of the Thames. This Art Deco building was designed by T. In 1939 Gilbert Bayes created the friezes that showed the history of pottery through the ages. The Lambeth factory closed in 1956 due to clean air regulations preventing the urban production of salt glaze. Following closure, work was transferred to the Potteries. The factory building was demolished in 1978 and the friezes transferred to the Victoria & Albert Museum. The office building in Black Prince Road still survives, complete with a frieze of potters and Sir Henry Doulton over the original main entrance, executed by George Tinworth. On 30 September 2005, the Nile Street factory closed. Some items are now made in the parent company, WWRD Holdings Ltd in Barlaston, Staffordshire. Further production is carried out in Indonesia. Royal Doulton Ltd finally went into administration on 5 January 2009. An artist who painted pottery for Doulton Lambeth. Her parents were bank manager Benjamin Barlow and his wife Hannah. They had seven siblings, three of whom also worked for Doulton, Florence, Arthur and Lucy who worked in the lesser role of a relief border decorator. Hannah, after studying at the Lambeth School of Art, started working for Doulton from 1871, becoming the first female artist to work there. Florence followed in 1873. By mutual agreement, Florence specialised in painting flowers and birds, and Hannah in horses and other animals, sometimes working together on individual pieces. Hannah died on 15 November 1916 in Clapham, London. Her sketchbooks are in the Sir Henry Doulton Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent. Hannah Barlow is, without doubt, one of the most iconic artists ever to have worked for Doulton Lambeth, her ceramic pieces are collected, admired, and revered the world over! Dimensions as follows. Height: 10.75 inches or 27.3 cm. Diameter: 2.75 inches or 7 cm (top). Diameter: 3.15 inches or 8 cm (base). Weight: 2 lb 11 oz or 1.24 kg. This delightful vase is an extremely rare find indeed. You might never find another vase this good and if there’s one thing I’ve learned about antiques and collectables when items are of quality and extremely rare he who hesitates usually loses out. Very Rare Frank A. Butler Large Doulton Tyg Commemorative 1880
VERY RARE FRANK A. BUTLER LARGE DOULTON TYG COMMEMORATIVE 1880. This is an incredibly rare large stoneware tyg (large English usually three handled drinking cup, which this is) made by one to the Doulton factory’s leading artist/designers frank a. It is depicted in the fore-mentioned large tyg / loving cup form with a panel of beautifully realised hand incised and painted relief white rose (York) flower heads amid stems and leaves, the above inscription to the next panel, and’Fitzwilliam, Leatham, Cavendish, Wilson, Ramsden, Fairbairn High Sheriff Sir Charles W. April 1880′ to the last. The handles are nicely realised and glazed blue/grey and buff brown, while to the rim is a relief chain link band. The base is stamped with the Doulton Lambeth mark and a retailer’s mark -‘John Mortlock & Co. Oxford Street London’ as well as Butler’s & Aitken’s hand inscribed monograms plus various other marks – see photographs and details. I think the commemorative aspect of the piece is the winning, for the first time, of a majority of liberal candidates in an area that was previously firmly Tory due to the’rotten borough’ system. It measures 6 3/4″ (17.25cm) h x 5 1/4″ (13.25cm) Dia & 7 (17.75cm) handle to handle approx; and is in very good condition, although there is a very fine hairline which extends 5cm from the rim (this is faint and quite fine and difficult to see on the outside – it goes under a handle), there is also a small firing hairline which shows only to the inner from the rim (it is the more pronounced one to the right in the photograph), another fine hairline to the base which extends 2cm to the flower face side and is again very, very difficult to see unless you put a glass on it, and lastly a small shallow sliver chip to the rim above the flowers – for all see photographs and details I will try to include all the above, although as I’ve said they are very difficult to see – they are all there and unfortunately I’ve done too good a job as they look much worse than they do in reality especially the one to the base which really can’t be seen. You can look at these as the worst case scenario. When listing the above imperfections it sounds like the piece is a wreck when, in fact, it presents very well and only the chip to the rim is immediately visible. This is a wonderful rare early piece of period Doulton Lambeth stoneware by one of their very best designers that commemorates an interesting period of English parliamentary history which is in great condition and with a realistic yet still low start price should get considerable interest from not only from doulton collectors but also those with an interest in 19th. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. Beautifully decorated Royal Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vase. Has Slaters Patent impressed mk. Base: six impressed marks and decorator’s incised initials: EA. I’ve not been able to identify this monogram. I don’t believe it’s Elizabeth Atkins as her incised mark is not the same as on this vase but she is recorded on other pieces with this pattern..
