Doulton Lambeth salt glazed stoneware dish by Agnete Hoy, 1952-1956
Size: 20.8 cm (8 inches) in diameter. Condition: Excellent condition, no chips cracks or restoration. This dish is the work of Agnete Hoy, the primary artist at the Doulton Lambeth studios in its final few years before its closure in 1956. Hoy, Danish by birth, had studied at the famous Copenhagen School of Art and worked at Bullers in Stoke on Trent when she first came to England, moving to Doulton in 1952. Her work fused some of Doulton’s famous techniques with her Scandinavian influence, and this dish is a good example. The simple design and muted tone belie considerable technical artistry in the dish. The sgraffito border on the inside of the dish together with a simple band around the outside, has a slightly different slip fifinsh before the overall salt glaze firing, which results in a lifting of the whole design. The salt glaze finish achieved is lustrous and refined. On the base are the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark, Agnete Hoy’s impressed signature, an impressed number 5 and two incised assistant’s marks. Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Matching Vases, circa 1876 to 1880, one A/F
These are a lovely pair of Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vases, dating from around 1876 to 1880 according to Doulton embossed stamp. They measure 32cm tall (12.1/2″) tall by 16cm (6″) wide. They are beautifully painted and are reflective of the Art Nouveau period. There is an artist’s mark which looks possibly a MB or WB. Unfortunately, one of the vases has suffered some damaged around the rim and the pieces are missing. The vases would be packed and dispatched safely. Large Rare Royal Doulton Vera Huggins Salt/Drip Glaze Vase. This is a superb piece in excellent condition with no chips or damage of any kind and no restoration. It is a very unusual glaze not dissimilar to that found in some Pilkingtons and even Ruskin pieces of the time. It is a substantial and heavy piece and although it is only 10.5 inches high it is also 10.5 inches in diameter which makes it an impressive piece weighing 4.5kg. Also exhibited at the Royal Academy, in addition to Paris, Johannesburg, Sydney and New York. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases”. Superb Signed Royal Doulton Vase By J. Hughs Plant, c1902-1910 Two brewers pub
Superb Signed Royal Doulton Vase By J. This vase looks absolutely stunning when on display, hand painted by one of royal doultons prolific decorators, john hughs plant was a experienced painter of landscapes country scenes castles and cottages, and worked for famous potteries such as wedgwood before moving to royal doulton in 1901. This vase comes in excellent condition apart from a small scratch which can be seen in photo 8. But displays beautifully, please see all photos to appreciate this stunning vase. Full doulton stamp to base in green with THE TWO BREWERS PONDERS END, design numbers. This beautiful vase stands 15cm tall. Who ever buys this stunning vase will not be disappointed. Thank you for viewing our items kindest regards Steve. Ponders End pub was destroyed and 20 people killed when it took a direct hit during the Second World War. On the night of Monday 30th September 1940, the German Luftwaffe were flying over the Lea Valley, probably looking to target the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock. Instead, several high explosive bombs were dropped over Ponders End. Hearing the air-raid sirens, drinkers at a public house on the corner of High Street and South Street took shelter in the pub’s cellar. Unfortunately, the bomb went straight through the building and exploded in the basement. Twenty people were killed that night, but only 17 bodies were recovered. One person who was pulled out alive lost both his legs but survived, while another died in hospital a day later. The Two Brewers was destroyed and never rebuilt, the site standing vacant for decades. At the time of the bombing Cliff Short was a 14-year-old boy who lived in Lincoln Road. He was a runner for the fire brigade and was one of the first people on the scene. He helped to retrieve the bodies from the ruined building – a memory that lived with him all his life. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases”.
