RARE Antique Doulton saltcellar 1872 artist E J Edwards, blue inner glaze
RARE Antique Doulton Salt Cellar from 1872 artist Emily J Edwards, blue inner glaze and relief decoration. This delightful Victorian relief decorated Doulton Lambeth stoneware salt cellar has a light/dark brown and blue outer decoration with an inner blue glaze. It is almost certainly a salt cellar and would have sat on the table, possibly as part of a set. It would have been one of the earliest Lambeth pieces before any mass production and like all Doulton products of this age was individually made by an artist, each piece being unique. The back has six small feet which were probably used as stand points in the kiln. It has a very unusual pattern of 3 triangles interlaced with three semi-circles. It is beautifully decorated with releif motifs/. On the back it has the undated impress mark of early Doulton which was only used between 1869 and 1872 which gives a very accurate date. The artist mark is that of Emily J Edwards who worked at Lambeth from 1871 to 1876. She was one of the first woman designers and decorators at Lambeth and Doulton expert Desmond Eyles describes her glowingly as ingenious. She died at an early age and her work if very rare and sought after (see photo of reference). The piece is in excellent condition with no visible damage and measures 8.5cm across (3.6) and is 3cm high (1.1). You can find similar pieces by other artists later (such as Eliza Simmance) but all have slightly different colours and decoration, This is very early for any Doulton salt glazed stoneware so an essential collectors item.
