RARE, EARLY, LARGE DOULTON ARTWARE TYG by MARK V. MARSHALL
RARE, EARLY, LARGE DOULTON ARTWARE TYG. This is a rare early, large, stoneware tyg (three handled cup) designed by one to the Doulton factory’s leading artist/designers Mark V. Marshall and was decorated by’JH’ for Joan Honey at the lambeth works in the latter 19th. It is depicted in the fore-mentioned tyg form with fine and intricate relief art nouveau tubelined foliate embellishments to the body between the three’d’ formed strap handles, with each roundel domed and bead bordered, while above is an incised decorative chain strap and ribbing to the rim. The base is stamped with the above mentioned Doulton Lambeth mark as well as Marshall’s and Honey’s hand inscribed monograms plus various other marks – see photographs and details. Marshall, like Tinworth and the Barlow sisters, was at Doulton from its inception and his work is now regarded as some of the finest to have emerged not only from the Doulton factory but English potting in general. It measures 6″ (34.5cm) H x 6 1/2″ (19cm) W handle to handle approx; and is in excellent condition with absolutely no defect at all to report apart from a firing hairline to the inside where one of the roundels was pushed out into a dome – this is factory done and retailed as such (the hairline is confined to the inner only and not visible to the outer surface) – see photographs and details. This is a wonderful rare early piece of period Doulton Lambeth stoneware by one of their very best designers with a lovely design which is in lovely condition and with a realistic yet still low start price should get considerable interest from all Doulton collectors.
