RARE, EARLY VERY LARGE DOULTON ARTWARE TWIN HANDLED VASE by GEORGE TINWORTH 1884
RARE, EARLY, VERY LARGE, DOULTON ARTWARE TWIN HANDLED VASE. By GEORGE TINWORTH – 1884. This is a rare, early, and very large stoneware twin handled vase designed in the’Seaweed’ pattern by one to the Doulton factory’s leading artist/designers George Tinworth, assisted by Harriet E Hibbut, at the Lambeth works in the latter 19th. Century (it bears the Lambeth 1884 back stamp). It is depicted in a twin handled ovoid form with an attenuated neck. While the body is covered in extremely intricate tube lining in an off white on a buff ground with stylised floral arabesques (the amount of work involved must be seen to be believed), and hand incised and painted’seaweed’ tendrils encompassing the circumference of the body which in turn has bands of sprigged relief flower heads. Tinworth’s monogram is incised to the base side of the neck, while the base is stamped with the above mentioned Doulton Lambeth mark as well as Hibbut’s hand inscribed monogram plus the date and various other marks – see photographs and details. Tinworth was at Doulton from its inception and his work is now regarded as some of the finest to have emerged not only from the Doulton factory but English potting in general. It measures 16 3/8″ (41.5cm) H x 6″ (15.75cm) W across the shoulder approx; and is in excellent condition with absolutely no defect at all to report. This is a wonderful rare early very large piece of period Doulton Lambeth stoneware by one of their very best designers which is in great condition and with a realistic, yet still low start price should get considerable interest from all Doulton collectors. RARE, LARGE EARLY DOULTON LAMBETH OLYMPIC COVERED TYG by JOHN BROAD 1908
RARE, LARGE EARLY DOULTON LAMBETH OLYMPIC COVERED TYG. By JOHN BROAD – 1908. Wonderful and I would think extremely rare, large, and early Doulton Lambeth covered stoneware tyg made at the Lambeth factory, which was made to commemorate the London Olympics of 1908 (Officially the Games of the IV Olympiad). It is depicted in a large, three handled, Tyg form with fine applied slip sprigging of field athletes (Long jump, Shot put, Running) on a salt glazed ground surrounded by hand tube lined tracery enclosing lovely, sponged / mottled glazes. The rim is silver-plated as is its knopped lid (both in fine un-worn original condition), while the handles are in a glazed ribbed’D’ form. The base is stamped with the Doulton Lambeth Factory mark, Broad’s mark, and other marks – for all see photographs and details. It measures 7 1/2″ (19cm) H x 6 1/2″ (16.5cm) W (at the base) approx; and is in excellent condition for a piece of its type and age with no defect at all to report, in fact it looks to have not been used at all as do all of the pieces I’ve recently bought from a collection which I’ll listing over the next couple of weeks – again see the photographs. This is a lovely quite rare and unusual piece of period Doulton Lambeth pottery with Olympic sporting interest. In great condition that with a realistic, yet low start price should get considerable interest from collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. A large and incredibly rare Doulton Lambeth Harvest Jug in fantastic condition. Made to commemorate the hugely popular March number 6’Here’s to Good Old Yale. A song written by Charles’Dasher’ Ives whilst he was at Yale, an ivy league university in the USA. Stands 8 1/4 inches tall and the diameter across the belly is about 6 1/2 inches. Late Victorian and as near as perfect condition. I’ve included a photo of a microscopic flek on the rim that is literally 1mm or less in size, for accuracy of description.
