RARE, EARLY VERY LARGE DOULTON ARTWARE TWIN HANDLED VASE by GEORGE TINWORTH 1884
RARE, EARLY, VERY LARGE, DOULTON ARTWARE TWIN HANDLED VASE. By GEORGE TINWORTH – 1884. This is a rare, early, and very large stoneware twin handled vase designed in the’Seaweed’ pattern by one to the Doulton factory’s leading artist/designers George Tinworth, assisted by Harriet E Hibbut, at the Lambeth works in the latter 19th. Century (it bears the Lambeth 1884 back stamp). It is depicted in a twin handled ovoid form with an attenuated neck. While the body is covered in extremely intricate tube lining in an off white on a buff ground with stylised floral arabesques (the amount of work involved must be seen to be believed), and hand incised and painted’seaweed’ tendrils encompassing the circumference of the body which in turn has bands of sprigged relief flower heads. Tinworth’s monogram is incised to the base side of the neck, while the base is stamped with the above mentioned Doulton Lambeth mark as well as Hibbut’s hand inscribed monogram plus the date and various other marks – see photographs and details. Tinworth was at Doulton from its inception and his work is now regarded as some of the finest to have emerged not only from the Doulton factory but English potting in general. It measures 16 3/8″ (41.5cm) H x 6″ (15.75cm) W across the shoulder approx; and is in excellent condition with absolutely no defect at all to report. This is a wonderful rare early very large piece of period Doulton Lambeth stoneware by one of their very best designers which is in great condition and with a realistic, yet still low start price should get considerable interest from all Doulton collectors.
