Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vase Signed Elizabeth Sayers & Elizabeth Atkins 1882

Offered here is a stunning Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vase which is Signed by both Elizabeth A Sayers & Elizabeth Atkins. It is dated 1882. There is the impressed Doulton Lambeth marks and other extensive marks including the impressed date, 1882. The entire piece measures 10.5 inches tall and the decoration and shape is stunning. It has influence from the Art Nouveau period, Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic Movement, and is a fabulous piece of Antique c19th Art Pottery. Works by these Artists can make very high figures, please see some of the biography of each artist below. Elizabeth Sayers was only at the Doulton Lambeth works for a few years from about 1876 to 1883. During that short period she produced some exquisite items of early stoneware. Despite not being one of the many long service employees (many worked at Doultons for over 40 years) a number of items produced by her are illustrated in the’bible’ of early Doulton stoneware, Desmond Eyles’ and Louise Irvine’s “The Doulton Lambeth Wares”. Works by her of superb design and craftsmanship are shown on pages 83, 89, and 127. Elizabeth Atkins is recorded as having worked at Doultons from 1876 to 1899. Although not one of the leading designers, she worked in the period when Doultons were exploring new techniques and designs. In this period, the range of coloured glazes increased and such techniques as lathe-turning of the unbaked clay were used. Her technique was not the incised designs of the top designers of the day, such as. Frank Barlow, and all the Barlow sisters, but more the use of pâte-sur-pâte and applied designs. The Vase does have an issue which is more visible internally rather than externally. This could be improved on with restoration, but I prefer to leave things as they are. Externally, it is much less noticeable. We are offering this with No Reserve, albeit we are well aware this could make many hundreds of pounds.
