RARE, VERY LARGE EARLY DOULTON LAMBETH OLYMPIC MUG by JOHN BROAD 1908
RARE, VERY LARGE EARLY DOULTON LAMBETH OLYMPIC MUG. By JOHN BROAD – 1908. Wonderful and I would think extremely rare, large, and early Doulton stoneware mug designed by John Broad and produced at the Lambeth factory, which was made to commemorate. The London Olympics of 1908 (Officially the Games of the IV Olympiad). It is depicted in a large, waisted mug form with fine applied slip sprigging of field sports (Football, Shot put, Running) on a salt glazed ground surrounded by hand tube lined Art Nouveau tracery enclosing lovely, sponged / mottled glazes. The rim is silver-plated, while the handle is in a glazed ribbed and looped’C’ form. The base is stamped with the Doulton Lambeth Factory mark, Bessie Newbury’s, the decorator’s, mark and other marks – for all see photographs and details. It measures 6″ (15.25cm) H x 6″ (15.25cm) W (at the base) approx; and is in excellent condition for a piece of its type and age with no defect at all to report, in fact it looks to have not been used at all as do all of the pieces I’ve recently bought from a collection which I’ll listing over the next couple of weeks. Again see the photographs. This is a lovely quite rare and unusual piece of period Doulton Lambeth commemorative pottery with Olympic sporting interest. In great condition that with a realistic, yet low start price should get considerable interest from collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. I will endeavour to report on an item which has had either; however I take no responsibility if an item has been tampered with and I cannot detect it. Please don’t waste your time asking for a b.
