Antique Doulton Lambeth SALTGLAZE STONEWARE MOTTO PUZZLE JUG 9
DOULTON LAMBETH SALTGLAZE STONEWARE’MOTTO’ PUZZLE JUG. Circa 1875, impressed roundel mark, incised potter’s initials MR> Oviform. The pierced neck applied with a hollow tubular brown rim and five spouts, the paneled side inscribed,’HERE GENTLEMEN COME TRY YOUR SKILL / I’LL HOLD A WAGER IF YOU WILL / THAT YOU DON’T DRINK THIS LIQUOR ALL / WITHOUT YOU SPILL OR LET SOME FALL’ within a brown sprigged octagonal frame and blue surround. Puzzle jugs were designed to challenge someone to drink from them without spilling the contents: harder than it looks, as the neck of puzzle jugs has holes. They were used for tavern drinking games.
