Doulton Lambeth Art Pottery Aesthetic Period teapot, Bessie J Youatt, dated 1884
Size: 12.5 cm tall to top of lid. Condition: The teapot is not without faults. There is a hairline crack running from the rim to about halfway down the body, difficult to spot externally. The end of the spout has been chipped and filled, there is another filled chip on the foot-rim and the are a few losses to some of the moulded pattern. This delightful small teapot is a lovely example of the Aesthetic “Japonesque” style which was all the rage at the time it was made – Gilbert and Sullivan drew on the fashion for The Mikado which was written in 1885. The teapot is elaborately decorated with Japanese style floral patterns and fan shaped motifs. The main designer of the teapot was Bessie J Youatt, who worked for Doulton from 1873 to 1888. The piece is very well marked underneath with the main designer’s incised mark and the incised number 631 on both the lid and the teapot, the main Doulton stamp with the date 1884, and on the teapot some additional assistants’ marks. I bought this teapot heavily restored and have cleaned off all the old restoration. I think it displays well and is a great piece as it is, but clearly it could be restored again as preferred.
