Doulton Lambeth Saltglaze Stoneware art pottery Candlestick Griffins 1879

A superb antique Doulton Lambeth saltglaze stoneware art pottery Candlestick. The candlestick rises up in segmented form from a square box shaped base – each corner of the base guarded by a Griffin with spread wings and puffed chest. The clawed feet of each beast stand on the four balled feet. Decorated in an all over elaborate mix of designs using typical Doulton muted blues, greens and creams. This is an exceptionally rare item – looks great on display – and can therefore be excused some areas of damage. There has been a break in the centre of the stick. Three of the Griffins have minor chips to their plumage. One has further damage to its foot and the nearby base rim. I have tried to show all this in the photos which need to be viewed to assess damage. Height – 21.5 cms. Fully marked to base.
