Royal Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jug bucolic figures and motto in relief c1902. Inscribed “Good is not Good Enough The Best is not TooGood”. 18 cm high 19 cm from handle end to pouring lip. 13 cm wide at the top. Base diameter 9 cm. Excellent impress mark very clear. Volume 1.75 pints. Most likely used for wine although also for ale and beer. The relief decoration of nymphs holding bunches of grapes, vine leaves and the bearded face of Dionysus (Bacchus) under the pouring lip, takes this jug into a different class. Described as the nature god of fruitfulness and vegetation, especially known as a god of wine and ecstasy, Bacchus was followed by Satyrs Nymphs. Wherever he went there were parties and much going on. This relief is certainly in Party mode. The concept of BEST in relief can be applied to the construction of this delightful jug.
