FINE PAIR of DOULTON LAMBETH HAND SCRIMMED ART NOUVEAU VASES by FRANCIS C. POPE
RARE, EARLY PAIR of DOULTON LAMBETH HAND TUBELINED & PAINTED ART. NOUVEAU VASES by FRANCIS C. This is a fine early pair of Art Nouveau stoneware vases designed by Francis C. Pope and decorated by Bessie Newbury at the Lambeth factory dating, I would guess, to the first decade of the 20th. They are depicted in a shouldered slightly tapering cylindrical form with wide necks and rims and decorated with fine and intricate hand tubelined and painted images of stylised floral motifs of an Art Nouveau / Celtic style on a sponged blue mottled ground. There is an underglaze monogram or initials on one which is obscured. Lastly if a gun was held to my head and I was asked who designed I’d opt for Pope first and foremost, so I have no problem with the assignation and Newbury’s monogram and other incised marks – see photographs and details. They measure 10″ (26cm) H x 4″ (10cm) W approx; and is in excellent condition with no defect at all to report – see photographs and details. These are a wonderful rare early pieces of period Doulton Lambeth stoneware which are in great condition and with a low start price should get considerable interest from all Doulton collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. I will endeavour to report on an item which has had either; however I take no responsibility if an item has been tampered with and I cannot detect it. Please don’t waste your time asking for a b.
