Royal Doulton Lambeth Grape Vine Vase Bessie Newberry c. 1920’s
A royal Doulton Lambeth vase decorated with grape vines and fruit. Impressed Royal Doulton mark to the base and the incised mark for the artist Bessie Newberry – c. Royal Doulton Lambeth Vase – Pigment Brush-Lined Decoration – Grape Vines – Bessie Newbery – c. A Royal Doulton Lambeth vase standing on a rounded foot with the bulbous body giving way to a large rounded opening. The vase is decorated with grape vines against a green ground using the pigment brush-lined technique. To the base is the impressed Royal Doulton Lambeth Lion mark – also present is the artist mark for Bessie Newbery and this may well be one of the original designs that she produced towards the end of her time at the Lambeth factory. 19.5cm high, 17cm wide (maximum), 7.5cm at the base, unpacked weight 1.2kg. Rare Doulton Lambeth Faience Footed Moon Vase Or Flask With Handles c. 1877
A scarce footed Doulton Lambeth faience moon vase with handles to the shoulders and a floral design completely encircling the body. Impressed Doulton marks to the base and the impressed date – 1877. Early Doulton Lambeth Footed Moon Vase With Handles – Floral Faience Decoration – c. A rare and early Doulton Lambeth faience footed moon vase with handles. The vase has a flattened rounded body decorated all the way round with a floral scene of stems, buds, and flowers against a dark blue ground. To the base is the impressed Doulton Lambeth Faience mark and the impressed date – 1877 – there is no artist mark to the base, we suspect that there is a mark within the decoration but we have been unable to find it. A lovely early piece with a rare shape that would enhance any quality collection. 21cm high, maximum diameter 14cm, 5cm at the base. In good condition – there is some well executed professional restoration to the very top of the narrow rim – the rest of the vase in good original condition. 1880 Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Cobalt blue Jag
John Slater (1844 – 1914) was the Art Director at Doulton & Co. Burslem from 1887 until his death in 1914. He studied at the Stoke-on-Trent School of Design and worked at Minton and then Pinder, Bourne & Co. Before moving to Doulton & Co. As well as being a painter who signed his works, he was involved in the development of many of the special glazes used by Doulton, including rouge. And for a number of patents relating to transfer printing from photographic plates onto ceramics, his works are marked “Doulton Slater Patent”, a process which involves the use of lace fabrics impressed into the surface of clay as a decorative technique. An exceptional Doulton Lambeth stoneware art pottery’poets’ vase very much in the style of the Martin Brothers. The body is superbly incised with grotesque type decoration – look for the faces concealed within it – there are three central panels celebrating the famous British Poets: Burns, Keats, and Scott. The impressed Doulton Lambeth rosette mark is present to the base as well as the impressed date mark – 1882. There are incised artist marks for Edith Rogers and assistant artists Rosina Brown and Augusta M. In good antique condition without chips, cracks, or restoration. Tall Royal Doulton Lambeth saltglaze stoneware Art Nouveau Vase by Francis Pope
An extremely tall and elegant art pottery vase made at the Royal Doulton factory in Lambeth – very much in the Art Nouveau style circa 1900 -1920. The vase was decorated by leading artist Francis Pope and features a design of stylised flowers using thick/bold tube lining. The different sections of the vase have then been filled by contrasting coloured glazes. A very striking piece. There has been good professional restoration to both the top rim and the base rim. The vase is therefore very impressive on display. Height – 34 1/2 cms. Fully marked to base including F. Both of the vases are signed by the designing artist – Margaret Thompson – which makes them quite rare as this was not usually the case – c. A pair of Royal Doulton Lambeth’New Style’ stoneware vases of globular shape and with’pigment brush-lined’ decoration and an attractive stylised Art Nouveau design. Both have the impressed Royal Doulton Lion and Crown mark to the base as well as the impressed shape number – 7941. Both, (unusually for these’reproduction wares’), are signed by the original designer – Margaret Thompson as well as the assistant artist Bessie Newberry.
