PAIR OF LATE VICTORIAN DOULTON LAMBETH SMALL EWERS, c. 1890s
Here we have a very attractive pair of hand decorated late Victorian Doulton Lambeth small ewers dating to around the 1890s. Founded as Jones, Watts & Doulton in Vauxhall in 1815, the firm moved to Lambeth in 1826, becoming Doulton & Co in 1854 and finally Royal Doulton in 1902. The company began producing art pottery at Lambeth around 1870 and quickly reached extraordinary levels of artistic quality. This pair of ewers were produced around the 1890s. They have the classic Doulton Lambeth colour combination of rich blues, browns and creams. The body of each ewer has a lozenge design with a central band of bars and beads featuring three flower roundels. Although very much a pair, these are hand decorated pieces with the small differences that make every item unique. The ewers bear the marks of Doulton artists Olive Dale and L. Whilst not the most famous names from the Doulton studio, they are both accomplished artists and have produced two truly beautiful pieces. Condition is extremely good with no chips or cracks and no damage to the raised areas of the pattern. It seems likely that these have always been kept as decorative pieces, although they are perfectly usable as individual water jugs for the table if desired. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The ewers stand 11.5cm / 4.5″ high and are 7.6cm / 3″ in diameter. The pair together weighs 581g / 20.5oz. Both ewers are stamped “Doulton Lambeth England” with one being rather clearer than the other. Both feature the GL inscribed mark for L. Goldsack (sometimes he was GL, sometimes LG) and one has the d stamp for Olive Dale. Both pieces have the 7090 product number which gives a date of 1893 for the design, although individual pieces could be a little later than this.
