RARE, EARLY PAIR of SPRIGGED DOULTON LAMBETH BEAKERS by ELIZA SIMMANCE 1882
RARE, EARLY PAIR of SPRIGGED DOULTON LAMBETH BEAKERS. These are a fine, early pair of stoneware beakers by the noted Doulton artist Eliza Simmance (or possibly Emma Shute, I can’t work out which, but on balance I think the former), made at the Lambeth factory and dates to 1882 – see back -stamp. They are depicted in a tapering beaker form with a silver- plated rim over pedestal foot and decorated with fine and intricate hand applied sprigging rendered on a stippled blue ground in bands. While the base is stamped with the above mentioned Doulton Lambeth factory marks, as well as Simmance’s (Shute’s) monogram, date and other impressed marks – see photographs and details. It measures 5 1/2″ (14cm) H x 3 1/4″ (8.25cm) W approx; and are in excellent condition with no defect at all to report, even the plate is good (in fact it looks not to have been used as do all of the pieces I’ve recently bought from a collection which I’ll listing over the next couple of weeks) – see photographs and details. This is a wonderful rare pair of early period Doulton Lambeth stoneware beakers by a fine artist which are in great condition and with a low start price should get considerable interest from all Doulton collectors.
