She worked for the Doulton factory between those dates, finishing when she married in 1895. She was known for her wonderful depictions of flowers and foliage and this pair is no exception. Beautifully and accurately executed paintings of passionflowers and foliage trailing around the vases against a vibrant green yellow ground. They are a good size measuring just under 34cm tall by approx. 15cm around the shoulder. Both vases have the impressed Lambeth Faience stamp, painted KR for Kate Rogers and pattern number and impressed number L4846. Overall condition is very good, there is an area of stained crazing to the lower section of one vase which extends nearly halfway round the vase, there are a couple of tiny grazes to the same vase. The other vase is in very good undamaged condition. There are no cracks, repairs or restoration – they have survived the years remarkably well. The vases are heavy, weighing just over 1.5kg each unpacked. Kate was the fifth child of W. Harry Rogers, born August 24, 1861, in Wimbledon, Surrey. She was barely 12 years old when her father died and two years later, her mother died and she went to live with her Aunt Mary Eliza Rogers. She became a china painter at the studio of the Doulton Co. In Lambeth in 1880 and worked there until she married William Hyde in 1895. Examples of her work can be found in Carrara, Impasto and Faience Wares, as well as on Earthenware pottery produced from Lambeth at the time. She seems to have specialized in flowers, fruit and leaves, which she painted onto the pottery with sure unhesitated brush strokes. To assist her in her work, she made many water colour studies of wild and cultivated flowers. Her water colour paintings of flowers and landscapes were exhibited with the Society of British Artists and she was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1883 to 1890.
