Unusual Doulton Lambeth Saltglaze Stoneware Hunting Jug c. 1890
A really unusual piece of Doulton Lambeth saltglaze stoneware with a sprigged and graffiti decorated hunting scene on a two tone brown glaze ground, probably dating from c. The jug is of a rounded oval form with a short spout and applied shaped handle, it is decorated with a very unusual variation on the hunting scene with a very detailed and impressionistic applied sprigged scene depicting a huntsman surrounded by hounds in a landscape with sgraffito highlighting and a light broemwn smear glaze finish, which looks incredibly effective against the two tone brown glaze ground. In all a really superb and hard to find piece of Art Pottery from a top factory! It measures 6 high. It is marked to the base with an impressed backstamp the crowned lion crowned rosette with “ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND” around, impressed numbers and black painted numbers/letters. It is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this item.
