Antique Doulton Lambeth William Ewert Gladstone (1809-1898) Commemorative Jug 9

This large stoneware Royal Doulton jug or pitcher was issued to commemorate the life of the Prime Minister William Gladstone (1809 – 1898). It features a tube lined quotation’Effort, honest, manful, humble effort -succeeds by its reflective action upon character better than success’ that swirls round a relief portrait of Gladstone himself. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or signs of use. The base has the impressed DOULTON LAMBETH ENGLAND backstamp used c. 1891 -1956, the number 8578 and the initials of the decorator, possibly Elizabeth Atkins. There is a firing flaw on the base (see photo 9) mentioned for accuracy only. Please examine all photos carefully as they constitute part of the description. Height: 9 (23 cm).
