DOULTON LAMBETH pipe smoking character Match Holder and Striker SIMEON

This is a rare match holder/striker, designed by Harry Simeon, from Royal Doulton, dating from approximately late 19th to mid 20thcentury. This piece has a characterful fellow, smoking a pipe, seated crossed-legged clutching a barrel which holds the matches. He sits on a seat with striking surface on the back. The base is impressed with model number 8655, the Doulton Lambeth backstamp and the painter’s initials NL. There are two firing cracks on underside, otherwise no chips or repairs. Harry Simeon was a talented child and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. After 3 years study there, he joined Doulton at Lambeth. A gifted designer he was responsible for bibelots, Toby jugs, Persian ware and many wall plaques. He worked for Doulton from 1896 to 1936.
