1880 Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Cobalt blue Jag
John Slater (1844 – 1914) was the Art Director at Doulton & Co. Burslem from 1887 until his death in 1914. He studied at the Stoke-on-Trent School of Design and worked at Minton and then Pinder, Bourne & Co. Before moving to Doulton & Co. As well as being a painter who signed his works, he was involved in the development of many of the special glazes used by Doulton, including rouge. And for a number of patents relating to transfer printing from photographic plates onto ceramics, his works are marked “Doulton Slater Patent”, a process which involves the use of lace fabrics impressed into the surface of clay as a decorative technique. An exceptional Doulton Lambeth stoneware art pottery’poets’ vase very much in the style of the Martin Brothers. The body is superbly incised with grotesque type decoration – look for the faces concealed within it – there are three central panels celebrating the famous British Poets: Burns, Keats, and Scott. The impressed Doulton Lambeth rosette mark is present to the base as well as the impressed date mark – 1882. Tall Royal Doulton Lambeth saltglaze stoneware Art Nouveau Vase by Francis Pope
An extremely tall and elegant art pottery vase made at the Royal Doulton factory in Lambeth – very much in the Art Nouveau style circa 1900 -1920. The vase was decorated by leading artist Francis Pope and features a design of stylised flowers using thick/bold tube lining. The different sections of the vase have then been filled by contrasting coloured glazes. A very striking piece. There has been good professional restoration to both the top rim and the base rim. A delightful pair of Royal Doulton Lambeth’New Style Vases’ with’pigment brush-lined’ decoration in the Art Nouveau style. Both of the vases are signed by the designing artist – Margaret Thompson – which makes them quite rare as this was not usually the case – c. Royal Doulton Lambeth Vases – Art Nouveau Design – Margaret Thompson & Bessie Newberry – c. A pair of Royal Doulton Lambeth’New Style’ stoneware vases of globular shape and with’pigment brush-lined’ decoration and an attractive stylised Art Nouveau design. Both have the impressed Royal Doulton Lion and Crown mark to the base as well as the impressed shape number – 7941. Both, (unusually for these’reproduction wares’), are signed by the original designer – Margaret Thompson as well as the assistant artist Bessie Newberry. Stunning, Large Doulton Lambeth Tube Lined Arts & Crafts Vase Narcissus
STUNNING, LARGE DOULTON LAMBETH TUBE LINED ARTS & CRAFTS VASE – NARCISSUS. This is a lovely very large, quite rare stoneware vase by Lily Partington produced at the Doulton Lambeth factory in, I would guess, the first decade of the 20th. Century which is decorated in an interesting and lovely Arts & Crafts/ Art Nouveau style with unusual tube lined and applied narcissus flowers and leaves. In a very large tapering shouldered form with wide everted rim it is depicted with mottled blue/green merging to mottled ochre body on which are stunning tube lined and applied stylised images of the narcissus. The base is stamped with the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark together with’8314′ and a decorator’s mark’lp’ (Lily Partington) – for all see photographs and details. It measures 12 1/4″ (31cm) h x 5 1/2″ (14cm) w (across the shoulder) approx; and is in excellent condition with absolutely no defect at all to report, in fact it looks never to have been used and straight from the factory. This is a lovely and quite unusual period doulton lambeth vase that is in stunning condition and with a low start price should get considerably interest from all collectors. A Stunning 13 1/2 Doulton Lambeth Lion Pride Vase by Hannah Barlow. Dated 1883
For sale today we have this Absolutely Wonderful Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Vase by Senior Artists Hannah B Barlow and Lucy Barlow. This very large broad baluster form vase features a rare and exceptionally well realised sgrafitto design of a pride of Lions (one male and 4 females), set against a hilly open plain background. Of special note is the sleeping Lion with a bone in front of him, while a Lioness stealthily approaches to steal a bite! The borders by Lucy Barlow are Victorian stiff leaves and applied rosettes that are highlighted with an unusually (for Doulton Lambeth) bold blue. Stands 13 1/2 ” tall x 6 ” in Diameter. Bears a Doulton Lambeth “cog” stamp dated 1883 and stamped “NC”? Incised HBB 189 for Hannah Barlow and LJB 234 for Lucy. As you can see, this is a stunning vase presented to the market displaying beautifully. The top rim has been restored while the rest of the vase is perfect. Hannah Barlow vases with Lions depicted on them seldom come to the market and t. His piece would make a wonderful addition to any serious Doulton collection.
